? What is an API?

API means “application programming interface”, which is a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other through a connection between computers or between computer programs. API is an application programming interface (API), it is a set of routines, tools for building software applications, and protocols. An API can express a software component in terms of its operations, inputs, outputs, and underlying types. An API defines functions that are independent of their respective implementations, which allows definitions and implementations to vary without compromising each other.

A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks.

API comes in the form of libraries that includes data structures, specifications for routines, object classes, and etc. In other cases, SOAP and REST services, an API is basically a specification of remote calls that are exposed to the API consumers.

An API differs from an application binary interface (ABI) in many ways, for instance, an API is source code-based while an ABI is a binary interface.
