Intelligent Bi-stable Structure: Sliding Shell Prototype
The Intelligent Bi-stable Structure is a unique concept. It is an adaptive, lightweight, and mechanism-free structural system that is capable of physical transformation. It serves as a basis for new types of movement joint for toys, clothing, and heavy machinery.
The patented invention assembles two or more bi-stable metal strips together with a set of connections. By exerting force on the bi-stable strip, the system 'snaps' and transforms into various end results, giving the user a high degree of control.
The prototype shown here is called the Sliding Shell prototype. Multiple layers of Bi-stable metal strips are connected together into a longer master strip, and then coated with an outer shell material that is allowed to slide back and forth. When more than one bi-stable strips are connected together, the collective material performance becomes completely different: the user is able to press anywhere along the strip and the transformation is more controlled and orderly. Sliding the shell will expose the strips, and allow that locale to be pressed and bent. This prototype illustrates the possibility of light-weight controllable joints for robotic arms and mechanical hinges. It is also useful as a creative art craft toy.
