We first find an interval [?_0, ?_1] such that the given function ?:[?_0, ?_1]→ℝ (set of real numbers) is (i) continuous on [?_0, ?_1] (ii) ? ′(?) keeps the same sign in [?_0, ?_1] and (iii) ?(?_0)?( ?_1) less than 0.
(These three conditions ensure that the function f in [?_0, ?_1] has a unique root).
Consider ?_2 =(?_0+?_1)/2 .
We get a sequence {?_?} of points in [?_0, ?_1].
Now if | ?_?− ?_(?−1 )| less than ε (a pre-assigned error ) then the root of f will be x_? in [?_0, ?_1].
