APT Rover Diff Guard | Defender | Disco 1 | RRC

Hi folks, Ben here welcome to another APT tech talk. Today we're looking at the APT rover diff guard. I'm going to tell you where it mounts, why it's there, what it's made off and why you need it. So lets take a look under the front here and we can see it mounted on the front of the diff centre. Why wrap factory steel with another layer of steel you ask? The front of the diff is only thin sheet metal, behind it resides the crown wheel, an essential part of the driving mechanism of the diff. As it's the lowest point of the vehicle and you can't see it from the driver's seat, it comes under some pretty severe abuse from time to time which can lead to catastrophic trackside failure. This issue is not unique to Land Rover, it's common with all makes of vehicle, fortunately for us however though, the Rover diffs have a few design characteristics that allow APT to build rock solid protection. So when APT designed our Rover diff guard we researched which materials provide the right combination of weight and wall thickness. We manufacture using 350 MPa mild Australian steel, its 5mm thick, laser cut and cnc section rolled to give you the end result. Why 350 MPa mild steel? 350 mild steel is stronger, it has a higher tensile strength than the lower graded (and cheaper) mild steels. The laser cutting, is more expensive than some other options but it is more precise, there is less likelihood of any steel warping, and produces a high quality finish. APT provides high quality GR8 ZP bolts and nylocs (and you know that not all bolts are created equal so quality is paramount). The diff guard is powder coated black using our in-house facilities this is to help prevent corrosion. The diff guard is there to give you peace of mind.
