Snapdragons out! Using the No Dig Method.

In this video we walk you through our No Dig technique for turning or cropping out a bed of Winter snapdragons. You'll be surprised at how easy and fast it can be done.

Just a note: Why we now prefer to use the term No Dig rather than No till? Although seemingly the same meaning; using the phrase No Dig I think is more indicative of the practices here in our market garden. We continually strive to eliminate the need to disturb the soil at all at any level and leave as much root mass in place in the soil as we crop on.
The phrase 'No Till' is broad and encompasses many different techniques some of which some use powered equipment to remove crop residue and/or to actually till/disturb the soil but perhaps to only 1" or so deep to prepare planting beds. In addition, many No Till Farms also routinely use the broadfork to crack or gently lift the soil to 10-12" deep as part of planting preparation. We strive to only use this tool in cases of soil compaction or when opening new beds in compacted areas.
No Dig is a term coined and used by Charles Dowding of the U.K. He uses sheet mulching techniques only as a method to feed the soil biology and to prepare his planting beds. We are not trying to be dogmatic here, but to find ways that eliminate unneeded steps that we have to do that nature can do better. As we advance in our techniques we believe the term No Dig better describes our processes and goals.
