Today I will show you how to use EPLAN with Microsoft SQL Server

SQL is a modern database tool that I strongly recommend for EPLAN users when working with large design teams or for users with large parts or project databases.

SQL is available in a few variants; EPLAN users will usually consider using one of two editions; the SQL server edition which runs on a server within a corporate IT environment, and the SQL express edition which is often installed on an individual user PC. The server version is a paid application while the express edition is free.

For most small EPLAN design teams I still encourage users to start with the MS access legacy database tools built into EPLAN and only migrate to SQL when you feel that you are ready. Access databases are very simple to create and use within the EPLAN application, for this reason I encourage all new users to try using them as they rarely cause problems for new users. As your EPLAN design team gets larger and as the concept of parts and project databases are well understood within your design team, consider migrating your data to a REAL enterprise level data management tool which would be SQL. I do no encourage new EPLAN users to start using SQL databases unless your team includes at least one experienced EPLAN user who can deal with any issues that may arise.

The installation and implementation of SQL for use with EPLAN is not considered by most as a simple task and many problems can arise for new users. However, once installed and properly configured SQL databases work seamlessly with EPLAN and the uses quickly forgets what format they are in because they always work.
