Git2 Action Camera Repair

A brief video showing replacement of the clock backup capacitor on the Git2 action camera. There have been multiple reports of this failing.

I've owned this camera for over a year and a few months ago it started randomly losing the date, as well as discharging batteries while not in use.

This is a huge problem for loop recording, as after the date resets, all the files being written appear older than the files previously recorded, so existing files can't be over written; the camera is restricted to using the free space on the card at the time the date reset. You can lose a lot of footage if you don't realise this has happened - as the camera appears to be recording normally.

After commenting in one of the forums that Gitup participate in, and contacting Gitup support, they very kindly sent me a replacement capacitor so I could repair the camera myself.

Repair is quite straightforward for anyone with reasonable soldering skills, even though the device (of course) uses SMDs and isn't intended for this kind of repair. Fortunately the capacitor is one of the largest components on the PCB!

There isn't any need to remove the PCB or disconnect anything for this repair, it is only necessary to remove the battery and the front cover.

The capacitor I have is probably about 3.80x1.5, which would make it the XH311HU IV07E or XH311HG IV07E, no idea which, the G is 0.035F, U is 0.02F, it may not matter - I'd probably assume the higher impedance and lower capacity G version because it will be a fraction of a cent cheaper to the manufacturer. Looks to be 3.3v,

The larger XH414 seems to be available on Ebay (damn these things are dirt cheap) but it may not fit.

If you cannot obtain a replacement capacitor, consider carefully cutting the top tab on the defective capacitor, so that it at least doesn't continue to drain the battery while not in use. Careful use of a dremel across the fold in the tab would probably do the trick.
