Sodder Family: CASE STUDY
PLEASE SHARE: December 24th 1945. Christmas Eve in Fayetteville, West Virginia. George Sodder and Jennie Sodder along with 9 of their 10 children are having a subdued holiday celebration. Subdued because one of their children, Joe, was unable to make it home in time for Christmas. The Sodder family had no way of knowing that within a matter of hours the subdued atmosphere would be supplanted by one of terror and sadness. At some point after midnight a raging fire began to consume the Sodder's 2-story frame home.
Parents George and Jennie Sodder along with 4 of their children are soon accounted for outside the home. However, 5 children are nowhere to be seen. In less than 20 minutes the Sodder's house is reduce to a smoldering pile of embers. The fire department arrives hours later and cools the debris so that it can be searched. Curiously, no trace of the Sodder's 5 children can be found.
Authorities are unable to determine, with absolute certainty, the cause and origin of the fire. They conclude, however, that the Sodder children perished in the flames. 77 years later some still question the finality of this conclusion. Some believe the children were kidnapped from their home and sold on the "baby black market"; others think a former employer of George Sodder sought his revenge by kidnapping the children and torching the home; others think the children may have been taken by another family member and spirited away to another state...or country.
