Reid: Hey, I'm Reid. This is Brad. We're talking today about NetApp Disk Shelves. We get inquiries all the time that's someone's got a filer or a controller and they're trying to add more capacity, but they don't know what disk shelf they should add. There's four disk shelves that we typically run into that customers are trying to add. The old, old disk drives are DS14MK4s and MK2s, but most people have graduated to this newer disk shelf. One of the four is called DS4243. Where is that shelf typically most applicable, Brad? What do people use that shelf for?

Brad: It's very versatile because it holds twenty-four drives and it supports all three drive types: SAS, SATA and SSD. It was the first of the new generation NetApp Disk Shelf. You can use that for high-density storage or for performance. Whatever you need.

Reid: Cool. I think it goes with almost every box. I think the DS4243 goes with 8000s, 3000s-

Brad: It is supported by every filer model right now.

Reid: Awesome.

Brad: As long as you have the correct SAS cable interface to plug into.

Reid: Okay. It needs a SAS interface?

Brad: Yep. Every new shelf requires a SAS interface.

Reid: Got you. I hope that gives you a little bit of explanation. There's four disk shelves that are out right now, and you can use an upgrade for just about every filer out there. Knowing the workload, and your growth, as well as how much room you have in your data center, really will dictate what shelf you're going to pick. Also, the pricing perspective as well, so a new disk shelf is typically going to be about two or three times more expensive than a used disk shelf, so make sure you have a used strategy when you upgrade your filers to get more capacity for less money.
