How To Change User Rights In Windows 10

In this quick tech how to video, I’m going to show you a few places to change the account type, or user rights, of a user inside of Windows 10.

The first two we’ll look at are by finding the setting inside of Settings or Control Panel, and then we’ll look at a setting inside of the advanced user accounts options.

First, we’ll look at Settings. Select the search bar and type settings. Once the result comes up, choose it or hit enter. You can also right click on the Windows icon and choose Settings here.

Inside of the settings menu, choose Accounts. From the left menu, choose Family and Other Users.

Scroll down to the bottom and you’ll see the other user’s section. If you don’t have any other users on this machine, you’ll first have to add them. To change their user account, select their profile, and then hit change account type. Change this from Standard to Administrator, or vice versa, and then confirm by hitting Ok. It will then change that user's account type and rights.

The next way to find this is through Control Panel. Again, in the search bar at the bottom, type Control Panel, and choose it when it comes up. On the Category view, choose User Accounts, and then Change Account Type. Select the user that you want to change, and on the next screen choose change the account type. Again, make your change, and then hit change account type at the bottom.

Finally, we’ll look inside of the advanced user accounts control panel. In the search bar, type Run or press the Windows key and R at the same time. Once the run dialogue comes up, type Netplwiz, and then hit enter. To make changes, check next to users must enter a username and password. Next, choose the user you want to change, and hit properties. Select the second tab at the top, group membership, and you can then make your change. One thing about using this option, are there are a lot more choices in the types of user accounts that you can choose from. But to keep this video simple, we’ll just choose one of the basics. Once you make your choice, hit Apply and Ok, and then close the window.
