Contract Testing & Setting up maintainable UI tests

Every company wants to become more agile and better able to respond to market changes these days. One of the main drivers of agile success is using Test Automation to ensure a stable, high-quality product. However, a lot of test automation projects fail due to unrealistic goals, awful implementations or struggles to keep the test suite maintainable.

Tonight’s focus will be on successes in test automation. Firstly, Gerwin will share his vision on Consumer-Driven Contract Testing, an essential aspect of test automation in a microservices context. Secondly, Mazin and Joost will share their vision on maintainable test automation, and the framework they build to realize that vision.

Title: Consumer-Driven Contract Testing Consumers first, API's Second

Abstract:
"API first" is nowadays an often heard approach for development of services. Mostly we start with specifying what our to-be-developed service needs to deliver. In essence, this is a valid approach to make sure you develop what you deliver, but in practice, we have the risk overdeveloping for non-existing needs. If we don't know what consumers of our API want, we simply choose to expose all that we're responsible for in a way we think they might want that information. Starting with consumers of your API as specifiers of their needs, counters this pitfall. In this presentation, we'll explore how this works when we have multiple consumers of the API. You'll learn the basics of the open-source tool Pact and how it facilitates development. Also, you'll learn why Contract Testing is essential when you want fast and early feedback in development of microservices.

When you look at (UI) test automation projects in the market today, you will notice familiarities in the struggles they encounter: Where do you start? What should you think of when setting up a framework? How can you ensure maintainability of your tests? In this session, we would like to share our vision on how to tackle these issues using a custom Java/Spring Boot framework. A framework that is available for everyone to use in their own project.

Mazin is a test consultant with great enthusiasm for automating. His motto is: “If you need to do something more than twice, automate it.” His motivation? Ensuring that tasks are performed quickly and without human error. Joost is a test automation engineer at Capgemini. He has been working mostly in the public sector, helping clients to set up tests on all levels of the testing pyramid and incorporating these tests in CI/CD pipelines.
