For over a century, the Harappan civilization’s enigmatic seals have been treated like a lost book waiting to be read.
In this video, we break down a provocative new paper by Boris Kriger (2026) that argues the "Indus Script" might not be a language at all, but a sophisticated administrative registration code—the ancient world's version of a barcode or ID system.
The Mystery of the "Undecipherable"
Scholars have been at a deadlock for 100 years. Proponents of the linguistic theory point to the signs' complex structure , while skeptics highlight the extreme brevity of the texts and the lack of long inscriptions. • Numeral Anomalies: Stroke-numeral signs appear in fixed positions and follow a distribution that defies the natural patterns of language (Benford’s Law).
• The "Fish" Test: When researchers try to assign linguistic values to common signs (like the famous fish symbol), the results across different seals turn into gibberish.
A New Way to Solve the Puzzle
Instead of guessing meanings, Kriger proposes a Decision Framework—six testable predictions to finally decide if we are looking at names, commodities, or actual speech.
