A proxy by itself is not only an IP address. Proxies are made up of IP addresses and dedicated software that allows them to operate in an intended manner. As forward and reverse proxies are used for different tasks, they each have different software to perform smoothly.

Let’s look at a brief comparison between a forward proxy vs a reverse proxy. For one, a forward proxy is the one that sits in front of a user. It acts as a middle-man between you and the website you’re trying to access. In other words, the user’s request goes through the forward proxy first and then reaches the website.

But how reverse proxy work? Reverse proxy resides in front of backend servers and transfers client requests to these servers. Once a reverse proxy receives a client’s request, it passes it on to another server and then forwards it back to the client, making it look like the initial proxy server processed it.
