Burnout (PS2) - Part 4
More recently, I got my hands on the GBS-Control AIO, a brilliant upgrade to Tvia's Trueview5725 line of video upscalers which transforms a simple video converter into a 15KHz/31KHz beast! Props to Tinker Plunk, amoore2600 and Zerohimself for putting out this variant in particular as it is feature-rich and incredibly easy to use once you get the hang of it.
I had previously uploaded a playthrough of Burnout on GameCube and, remembering what fun I had playing it, I decided to give it another go on a different machine - this time the original Playstation 2 version from late 2001.
While certainly less refined compared to the better Xbox and GameCube ports, oh and ofcourse it's sequels, Burnout remains to be one of the most accessible racers out there. There is a sense of speed to the raw thrills from this one that make for exceptional gameplay. With original track design and a unique gimmick that favours avoiding crashes, besides racking up points based on how dangerous you drive, Burnout is elevated to one of the best, a natural fit for the system. Needless to say, I would recommend this to those who have not to put the time into Burnout as it is real easy to find and still costs next to nothing to buy.
A number of things I must acknowledge before people decide to treat this video series with any level of seriousness:
-This PlayStation 2 version of Burnout is a little rough: Twitchy steering, ridiculous rubber-banding and traffic AI that often makes little to no sense, are only a couple of flaws. I purposefully left in a race I lost in Part 3 just because I found it so funny that I lost to an apparently invisible opponent.
- As stated earlier, this playthrough is the very first of mine made using Ranma's GBS-Control. I used a HDMI 1080p preset via RGB Video with Bob-deinterlacing and made sure to keep the line-filter, peaking and step response enabled as well. The game uses field-rendering and can appear a touch low-res, regardless of any desired method of picture reconstruction. Burnout often swaps internal resolution between menus and in-game graphics too though, thankfully, the scaler keeps signal despite this.
So with that out of the way, please do enjoy!
