WordPress vs. ...

So you may be comparing WordPress vs some other platforms you can use. Staying out of the do-it-yourself space, we’re going to chat quickly about WordPress vs. Drupal vs. Joomla which have been the three big name, open source, content management systems in the last bunch of years.

So WordPress was, of course, born as a blogging platform and since then grew into the most widely used content management system on the planet. But what’s important to think about is WordPress is a publishing platform. If what you’re trying to build is essentially publishing content WordPress is probably a great choice.

What differentiates Drupal is that Drupal is a much more powerful programming platform. If you’re looking to build a complex, robust, functional, application of interactivity and actually doing something rather than just publishing content, Drupal actually might be a better choice for you.

Joomla, the third of what use to be the big three, I don't want to offend anybody per se but it hasn’t gone so well in recent years. It had some bad upgrades, hard things that you couldn’t get from one version to the next smoothly, it’s developer community has really lost, has taken a hit, it’s not as big. And likewise their market share shrank pretty dramatically.

Meanwhile, WordPress has taken over to this point, about 25% of the entire internet, while Drupal has very healthily flatlined. They’ve maintained their market share, it’s very good at what it does, but it’s a little more robust and a little more from a programming application standpoint and a little more expensive to develop on.

So if your website is primarily driven by publishing content, WordPress is the choice.
