MagneSafe Encryption Explained

MagTek's MagneSafe encryption uses best practices that go beyond current compliance guidelines. How? By performing encryption directly in the MagneSafe IntelliHead at the moment the card is swiped.

MagneSafe's encryption method uses the industry standard triple DES algorithm, an open, non-proprietary encryption method that is resistant to attacks. At the same time the data is encrypted, MagneSafe generates a unique encryption key per transaction using the key management system called Derived Unique Key Per Transaction or DUKPT. DUKPT delivers a unique result every time the same card is swiped. This one-of-a-kind key cannot be re-used, cannot be repeated and it cannot be predicted.

Other encryption methods use proprietary algorithms that are unproven, and may require a large investment. More importantly, their encryption occurs in a chip inside the reader or in backend software, not at the moment the card is swiped. As a result, clear text data can be more easily captured or compromised, opening the door to network and device attacks.
