What is the purpose of business? How effective are business organizations in their pursuits and how can business education help in the process? These, and many other related questions have long been at the core of debate and controversy between the critics and advocates of capitalism and free enterprise. 51 international researchers and practitioners from various business schools and backgrounds explored these questions during the first international, interdisciplinary workshop organized on this topic. Discover their contributions through various formats (videos, articles, presentations) and form your own opinion... Critiques are grounded in the belief that free enterprise is by nature a selfish endeavour and is incompatible with the common good. While a minority of opponents still believes in the superiority of "collective ownership of the means of production", the majority of critics have realized that there may be no viable alternative to a market economy and call on governments to impose severe restraints and penalties on business to minimize the negative impacts of selfish pursuits for profit. On the other hand, unconditional advocates of free enterprise recognize that the purpose and sole social responsibility of business is to maximize profit and argue that it is precisely by doing so that business organizations create social value...
