Blender can use 360-degree HDRI images to illuminate any scene and in my opinion makes for more realistic renders than using replicated lights (sun, point, etc) - especially in outdoor scenes

Reasons for using Environment Lighting in Blender

The Blender environment illumination uses a sort of built-in Dome that is always further out than any object in the scene although, to be honest, I have no idea of the supposed poly-count of this "virtual dome".
The Blender "virtual dome" does not seem to have any negative effect on Blender project sizes (poly-count etc) perhaps because this virtual environment is built into the software engine for all users and projects.

The absolute drawback to using environment lighting in Blender is when you share your project online for instance where the HDR image needs to go with the project, either embedded or in an accessible folder. This can make a 3meg project 103meg with a 100meg HDR required image.

In my opinion, environment lighting in Blender (especially the Cycles renderer) gives the most realistic results to any project but perhaps longer render times to get rid of the noise.
Usually, the bigger the image (ie 100Meg +) the cleaner the rendered surfaces, but this is by no means guaranteed.
MY ADVICE - is to use sIBL-GUI (free) on noisy yet essential HDR images because you can create a blurred and much smaller image for environment lighting (middle input in the shader mix node) while displaying the original realistic image to the camera (bottom input in the shader mix node).

I do not actually find that the bigger the HDR image the longer the render time, although large HDRi images can take a while to load. The main render time is usually determined by the output image size and what the materials of objects consist of (reflection, transparency, procedural textures, etc)

The ideal HDR image is one that looks fairly realistic in the background and also does not cause too much noise on object surfaces. The "rockhall" HDR image is my favorite up to now as it delivers very well on both these counts.

You can of course throw in any extra lights you desire to emphasize real-world local lighting illumination and reflections, which is a win-win scenario. In such a situation I might have to reduce the environment lighting strength to compensate.

After testing many HDR images I have found that I can never know which ones will give smooth results until tested. A noisy HDR image might contain the very scene you need for your project so let sIBL create a small blurred copy for lighting it.
