Title: Global Server Market AMD's Xilinx purchase PHP server-side programming languages

Music: Church of 8 Wheels - Otis McDonald

There are several reasons to prefer NAND flash over DRAM for caching servers. First, DRAM is volatile memory and must be continually refreshed in order to retain data. NAND flash uses roughly 5 percent as much power, which means it radiates far less heat. Both heat and power scaling are critically important to the United States’ efforts to deploy exascale computing, and DRAM is a major contributor to both problems.

Second, NAND flash is far denser than DRAM, with up to 100x the storage capacity of the largest DRAM IC. This is a straightforward advantage; the denser the storage medium, the larger the cache server can be. Third, NAND flash is much less expensive than DRAM, at roughly 1/10 the cost per bit.

So far, this seems like a win-win scenario for everyone, but there’s been one major flaw holding NAND back from eating the entire data center: It’s slow. As the chart below illustrates, even PCI Express-connected NAND has a fraction of the bandwidth and is hundreds of times slower than DRAM. So how can a DRAM cache ever be replaced by a NAND-based product? As the MIT research team shows, it takes a bit of clever engineering, but it can be done.

Amongst the small fry, the only truly impressive growth to be seen is in Ruby—which at 5.2 percent this month is still seeing continued uninterrupted growth in W3Techs' survey. This might come as a shock if you're mostly familiar with Ruby on Rails, which itself remains viable but seems to be on the decline in popularity.

There doesn't appear to be any clear contender for PHP to worry about in W3Techs' results, either—the inexorable decline of ASP.NET over the years hasn't produced a significant boost in either PHP or any other single language.

Founded in 1969, AMD makes semiconductor chips used in computer processing. The Santa Clara, Calif., company has been a second-tier player to Intel for most of its existence. Both Intel and AMD dominate the market for X86 chips, which are used in data centers, laptops, desktops and servers. Intel, however, has had a greater than 90% market share of this X86 for most of the last 30 to 40 years, Cordisco said.

“That’s what made Intel, Intel,” he said.

That began changing when AMD named Lisa Su CEO in October 2014. She outsourced its chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM). Another big move was AMD’s development of “chiplets” — which separate the server chip into multiple smaller dies — leading to faster production while lowering manufacturing costs compared to traditional chips.

The market is characterized by intense competition among established market players. Key market players are focused on product innovation and the introduction of new technologies to their server portfolios. For instance, in September 2019, Dell EMC introduced new products in its PowerEdge server portfolio. These new servers are equipped with 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors, which help to easily manage the platform and offer superior performance to the user. The new servers are built specifically for modern data centers for multi-cloud approaches.
