Compass-2 Satellite Decoder -- Note ref. Background Services

The Compass-2 decoder & telemetry uploader provided by the project team installs several applications and background services that you may not wish to leave running on your system all the time.


** IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not part of the project team and have no direct knowledge of this application. So, please follow these instructions with caution - there are almost certainly some errors in my understanding of how all the apps work. Corrections appreciated!

You can use this guide to:
-change the startup mode of the background services to "manual"
-start the background services on-demand
-stop the background services on-demand

The commands to change the startup mode of the background services to "manual" should only be required once, but if the software is upgraded or reinstalled, you should check the Services Control Panel to verify that they have not been changed back to "Automatic".

Paste the commands below into an elevated (admin) command prompt to change the Compass-2 related services to "Manual" start

sc config lkClassAds start= demand
sc config LkCitadelServer start= demand
sc config lkTimeSync start= demand
sc config NIDomainService start= demand
sc config nimDNSResponder start= demand
sc config mxssvr start= demand
sc config NITaggerService start= demand
sc config niSvcLoc start= demand
sc config NIApplicationWebServer start= demand
sc config postgresql-x64-9.4 start= demand

(you may need to press "ENTER" after the last command)



When you wish to use the Compass-2 decoder, it will be necessary to START the required background services.

Paste the commands below (all at once is ok) into an elevated (admin) command prompt to start the services required for the Compass-2 decoder (create a batch file if you wish!)

net start niSvcLoc
net start lkClassAds
net start LkCitadelServer
net start lkTimeSync
net start NIDomainService
net start nimDNSResponder
net start mxssvr
net start NITaggerService
net start NIApplicationWebServer
net start postgresql-x64-9.4

(you may need to press "ENTER" after the last command)

Now to use the Compass-2 decoder:

start soundmodem normally (or 1k2 AX.25 modem of your choice)
start Compass-2 decoder GUI

(the decoder will ask if you want to start soundmodem - assuming that you already started the modem of your choice, click "skip")

(when you switch to the "database" tab in the decoder GUI, you may be prompted for a path to PSQL.exe; assuming that you already have the correct path set {visible on left side of GUI}, click the "X" to close the File Path Request box)

process Compass-2 telemetry! (live RX or recorded audio)

close Compass-2 decoder GUI
close soundmodem

to stop Compass-2 related services, either reboot (assuming you have set them all to "manual" start) or paste the following commands into an elevated (admin) command prompt (create a batch file if you wish!)


net stop postgresql-x64-9.4
net stop NIApplicationWebServer
net stop nimDNSResponder
net stop niSvcLoc
net stop NITaggerService
net stop mxssvr
net stop NIDomainService
net stop lkTimeSync
net stop LkCitadelServer
net stop lkClassAds
