Dragonfire

For valour in the face of danger. Inspired by St. George

Saint George lived in the Middle East at the end of the third century. He was an officer in the Roman army and was martyred for his faith around the year 303. Today he is remembered as the patron saint of England and Georgia (both countries bear the Cross of St George on their flags), cities such as Beirut and Moscow, as well as of soldiers and farmers.

There are tales I hear of days most dire
of heroes, of battles, of dragon fire.

But heroism is a narrow road,
a path of pain not oft bestowed

for there one holds to truth in the face of lies
and stands to stare death in the eyes.

It is a path soaked through with sweat and tears,
that weaves through dungeons to the points of spears.

Where worldly honour is dragged through mud
and the price of valour is payed in blood.

Yet the resolve resounds through the tormentor’s worst
and the tormentor tires of torment first

For the hero rises time and again
the war to win and truth defend.

In perils and poison to choose to fight,
and in the coals and flames to find the light,

by such are the flames of honour fanned,
And on such shoulders do the kingdom’s stand.

The furnace of valour grows not cold,
And so long as it burns, so shall the tales be told.
