Identify and fix inconsistent formulas in Excel | Easy solution

In this video, we discuss a very common issue of inconsistent formulas in a worksheet.

The term inconsistent formula refers to the case where one or more formulas become out of line or inconsistent from the adjacent cell formulas due to manual error or by accident.

This inconsistency, though highlighted by Excel software through a notification in the corner of the affected cell, is hard separate out for fixing all at once if there are multiple such cases in a big data database.

There are multiple approaches to fixing the issue:

1. Through manual inspection of the entire column in order to identify cells with the green triangle in the upper left corner. This solution is easy to implement for small data sizes.

2. By using the built-in functionality in Excel to select the cells in a column or row containing inconsistent formulas all at once. To do this select the cell in the row or column containing the correct formula then press Ctrl+G. After that select the "Special.." option and in the next window, select the Row or Column difference radio button as applicable.

3. As a matter of best practice, it is advisable to check the correct formula and copy over the same across rows or columns as required to rule out the possibility of any inconsistent formulas.

Pitfalls of ignoring inconsistent formulas:

1. Error in analysis
2. Indirect impact on other dependent formulas.
