How to run Microsoft Defrag :Tutorial

When you use your computer for a long time, then the files are scattered in multiple locations on a hard drive. The fragmented area in the hard drive can slow down the performance of your computer. Defragment in Windows moves all the scattered data close to one location. This helps to speed up the read time of a hard drive and makes Windows performance faster. Let’s see the steps to run Microsoft Defrag.

1. Click on the Windows search bar at the bottom left of the taskbar.
2. Type defragment in the search bar, and click on the Defragment and Optimize Drives app to open it.
3. In the Optimize Drives window, select the drive that you want to defrag.
4. Here, I am selecting the C: drive, and then clicking on the Analyze button.
5. Once the Analyze process will complete, it will show you the status of fragmented data.
6. Like here, it is showing 6% fragmented in the Current status column.
7. Now, click on the Optimize button.
8. The Optimize process will run for a long time (this can run for hours), and the time consumption to complete the Optimize process would depend on the size of your hard drive and system speed.
9. I am fast-forwarding the video speed here to show you the final result.
10. You will find the OK status on the completion of Optimize process.
11. Let’s see another method to Defrag the drive.
12. Click on the Windows search bar, and type CMD.
13. From the search result, right-click on the Command Prompt app.
14. Click on the Run as administrator.
15. Click on the Yes button to allow the permissions.
16. Type the following command, defrag space C: and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
17. The defragmentation process will start in the Command Prompt window and will take time to complete it.
