Designers Learn Code: Points to Pixels

It is important to understand units of measurement for the web. With print design, we have points and picas. With print typography, the point is the smallest unit of measure. The actual size of a point has varied over the course of many centuries and has been interpreted differently by different countries. The pica is a basic unit of measure for American typography and represents 1/6th of an inch. In this video we will go over some of the history of the development of the point and pica systems. Once the age of desktop publishing came about, it was important to translate these systems to something that would work on screens and this is how the pixel was born. You will learn how print typography gets translated into web typography and why 16 pixels is considered the standard type size for most browsers.
