WordPress.org vs WordPress.com
WordPress is a blogging platform and there are two big differences that most people, some people, don’t understand the difference between and that WordPress.org vs WordPress.com. Hmmm…
WordPress.org is where you go to download the actual WordPress software, and install it on your own hosting, and get plugins and themes and build it all yourself and that’s really, really, awesome.
WordPress.com however is a totally hosted solution provided by Automattic (they’re kind of the commercial business behind WordPress). So WordPress is an open source project and they run WordPress.com which allows you to say “Hi, I want to blog about my food” and you go and say [type in] Gordonsfoodblog.wordpress.com and blamo! You have your website. From there they have a lot of ala carte features with custom domains names, you can buy your domain and map it over there, you can extend functionality and they’re usually very modest fees, usually on an annual basis and that’s how Automattic makes their money. They do very well by the way. And it’s a great solution for simple blogs.
However, when we’re talking about plugins and themes and all this custom custom functionality, you don’t get to do that at WordPress.com. It is a very specific little box and if you can play in their box, that’s the place to be.
When you’re talking about building business websites, most of the time we’re talking about WordPress.org.
