Write a Problem-Solution Essay

To write a persuasive problem-solution essay, you must think like a business person. If you can find a need in society, or solve a problem for others, and profit from it--you have a business. A problem-solution essay follows a similar formula, but seeks a solution that profits society instead of a business.

To develop the vision for your problem solution essay, you need to be both creative and optimistic. You need to not only see a problem in society as an opportunity, but create a plan to remedy that issue, and convince people that change is possible

Albert Einstein said “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” What makes a problem-solution essay so special, yet daunting is the creativity needed to challenge the status quo--and offer a solution that may sound strange or go against the perceived norm.

The first step for your problem solution essay is to identify a problem in society or your community that you are passionate about. What is something that upsets you, or what is some injustice that pains you? If you can uncover something that tugs at you personally, good. The more you care, the less your curiosity and ponderings feel like research.

The second step is to research the causes and effects of your identified problem. For example, if you seek to solve the issue of homelessness in your city, you must first identify what is causing people to be homeless? Are there systemic inequities harming certain groups of people? Is the issue symptomatic of a broader cultural problem? Or is there a more identifiable local issue creating the homelessness?

Once you have identified the causes of your problem, you can investigate the effects this issue has on the community, the world—or perhaps—the psychology of the individuals involved. The better and more thorough you grasp the causes and effects of your chosen problem, the more likely you will come up with a methodical and creative solution.

Your last step is to propose a practical solution for your problem. Be honest with your proposal. Every solution comes with trade offs. The better you can infuse counterarguments and possible pitfalls into your proposal, the more credibility and trust you will build with your audience.
