Two steps need to be completed in order to link a SSH key with Gitlab.
Install Git and create an SSH Key:
• Download and install Git. Go to https://git-scm.com/downloads and select your operating system. A download should start automatically.
• When installing git, be careful to choose the default editor used by Git. Vim editor is the default for the installation process. However, Vim is unintuitive and hard to use, especially for the uninitiated. Sublime Text or Visual Studio Code are recommended. You can leave the remaining installation steps as suggested by default.
• Once installed, open GitBash. You can find this on the Windows explorer, but you can also right-click on any empty space of a folder and open it from there. This has the major advantage of setting the current path as the default directory.
• There are different kinds of keys you can generate. GitLab requires an ED25519 key.
• Open GitBash at any directory and type ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "comment". Change "comment" to a title or name that will easily differentiate this SSH key from others. You will need to enter a path. It is suggested to just used the example path provided by git. To do so just press Enter. When asked for a passphrase just press enter and leave it blank.
• Now you have created the SSH key! You can see that two files are created. Now, we need to be careful since GitLab only asks for the public key. You should never share your local/private key.
• We can actually recover the created local key in the GitBash terminal. The easiest way is to go to the folder where the SSH key was created, open GitBash there and type cat id_ed25519.pub
• Notice that id_ed25519 was the default name given by git, but we can actually just give it whatever name we want when creating the key (e.g., tutorial as shown in the video).
Link the new SSH key to Gitlab:
• Go to the main GitLab website.
• On the top right there should be an icon with your profile picture. Click the icon and your handle should appear along with a dropdown menu.
• Click on preferences.
• On the left bar click on “SSH keys”. Here is where you need to insert your public SSH ED25519 key.
• To display your public SSH key, go to the GitBash terminal and type cat id_ed25519.pub.
• Copy the displayed text and paste it on the GitLab webpage. Give the key a title so it is easy to recognize (e.g., lab PC, personal laptop, etc).
• Set the expiration date to a date far in the future, or to whenever you think the project will end.
• Click on “add Key” and you are ready to go!
