From Code to Cloud - Full production pipeline using Java, Docker and Kubernetes | JCON 2020
DevOps from commit to deployment should not be painful, but instead, be a lot of fun. In reality, most toolchains and processes do not scale at all and are not easy to use. In some cases, the toolchains used for build and deployment may actually slow down the development process and therefore reduce productivity.
In this session, we will take a look at Maven Plugins, Java Libraries, and the features of Spring Boot, and how these can be used to boost productivity during development. Going further into full automation of the deployment process, we will see how an efficient build pipeline can be configured to build Java artifacts, docker images, and Kubernetes descriptors all at once. Finally, we will also cover how to perform rollout and rollback of changes.
From commit to rollout in production in under five minutes is possible and not at all complicated to achieve.
This session is filled with hands-on examples and presents a viable blueprint for situations where uncomplicated and fast deployment is necessary.
The presented toolchain consists amongst others of Java, Maven, Spring Boot, and the Maven JIB Plugin for Docker Builds. Decorate is then used to generate Kubernetes deployment descriptors, and kubectl automation provides the deployment of the artifacts created. All these components are combined in a fully automated, production-proven build and deployment pipeline that is capable to perform the rollout of committed changes within minutes.
