Replace or Substitute: Which Excel Text Function Should You Use?

In this video, we will compare two main Excel text functions - SUBSTITUTE and REPLACE. These functions are used to replace text strings with new text strings based on the function's criteria. The SUBSTITUTE function should be used when you know which specific text to be replaced and the REPLACE function is for when you want to replace a particular position of the text.

Lets compare both functions argument, first SUBSTITUTE Function;

SUBSTITUTE(text, old_text, new_text, [instance_num])

- The first argument of the SUBSTITUTE function is a text which is a required parameter and old_text & new_text are optional.

- Second argument 'old_text' denotes text to be replaced with a new string, third argument 'new_text' specifies the replacement string. Last but not least fourth argument '[instance_num] is optional that specifies the old text's occurrence in. your data to be replaced with new text.

Now let's see the arguments of REPLACE Function;

REPLACE(old_text,start_num,num_chars,new_text)

old_text - You need to specify the old text to be replaced, it usually points out to the cell number.

start_num - This specifies the starting position of your text string to be replaced.

num_chars- Specifies how many characters need to be replaced and is an optional argument.

Now I think we've made it clear with these above-mentioned excel functions, now let's go ahead and see some examples where they can replace or substitute one another.
