1- login to github.com, navigate to repositories, and click New button
2 - give new repo a name, make it public or private, check Add a README file, click Create Repository
3 - once repository is created go to Github desktop and clone the repository to your local machine. To do this click arrow in top left next to Current Repository, then click arrow next to Add and select Clone Repository...
Under the Github.com tab click the refresh button on the right and you should see your new repository in the list. If you are clone a repository that lives on someone elses github account, then you will click the URL tab and enter the url that you copied from their github.com page. the url can be found under the green code button on their github.com page
4 - At this point it is likely that you would want to go ahead and make your own branch off the main branch so you can start editing. on github desktop, in the top middle it says Current Branch. click the little arrow on the right and you will see a New Branch button. click this and a box will appear asking you which branch you want to branch off of (probably gonna be main) and for a name. name it something that makes sense as to the work you are doing. then hit create branch.
5 - once you are on the right branch (Current Branch at the top says the branch you are on) you can then open your code editor and open the folder at the path you cloned it too. most likely Documents/Github/folderName. do not go into the folder. open at the folder level. go ahead and make the changes you need to make
6 - when you are finished and ready to submit your code, make sure everything is saved and go back to github desktop. you should see our changes. at the bottom left there is a small box for your commit summary and description. putting something meaningful here and then click Commit to 'branchName'. if you did not publish your branch when you made it, you can do that now with the button at the top next to Current Branch. it will say Publish Branch. Once you do that the button should change to Push Origin. click this to send your changes on your branch to github.com
7- In the blue box just below you will see a button that says Preview Pull Request. click this and then click Create Pull Request at the bottom right in the box that pops up. this will open github.com where you can put some description of what you are requesting gets pulled into the main branch. once satisfied click Create Pull Request at bottom right.
**note in the video we did this process from github.com. either way is fine.
8 - now that the pull request is made it is up to whomever is in charge to approve and merge the pull request. once it is decided that this will be merged that person will go into the pull request tab near the top of the screen on github.com and scroll down to the green Merge Pull Request button. click it and click confirm and that's it. now the code is part of the main branch of the repositiory.

**there main be merge conflicts along the way and code can usually be reverted back to a previous state is something gets messed up


**steps 1-3 only need to be done the first time a repository is made. most of the time you will start at step 4
