Real cross-platform Java on mobile devices

For a number of reasons, it has been extremely difficult to run standard Java applications on mobile devices (e.g. smartphones and tablets). Most of the cross-platform solutions so far were based on non-standard API's. Today, that situation has changed. RoboVM and LodgON show that you can use your existing Java applications that run on desktops and package them as native applications for iOS and Android, using the JavaFX API's that are part of the Java 8 Platform, Standard Edition. There is no need to learn new languages or API's, or to port your application to every single platform you want to support. You can use the open-source SDK's and publish your JavaFX application to the AppStore and the Play Store. With the rise of mobile devices, and the growing popularity of native applications on those mobile devices, this means that the target market for Java developers is growing as well.

Johan Vos started to work with Java in 1995.

He was part of the Blackdown team helping port Java to Linux. With LodgON, the company he co-founded, he is mainly working on Java based solutions for social networking software.

Because he can't make a choice between embedded development and enterprise development, his main focus is on end-to-end Java, combining the strengths of back-end systems and embedded devices. His favourite technologies are currently Java EE / Glassfish at the backend and JavaFX at the front-end.

Niklas Therning
