Git tutorial part 2: repository initialization

In this video we'll cover setting up user info, repository initialization, status, adding files, committing, viewing the commit tree, and using help.

0:54 : git config --global user.name "|username|". Configures your username to be |username|.
1:10 : git config --global user.email "|email|". Configures your email to be |email|.
1:22 : git config --list. Shows all configured parameters.
2:28 : git init. Initializes an empty git repository.
2:58 : git status. Prints the current status of the repository, usually with hints from git.
3:06 : git add |filename|. Adds an untracked file named |filename| to the repository.
3:20 : git commit. Commits changes to a new version.
4:26 : .gitignore file. This file lets git know which files to ignore, simply add filenames/wildcards to the .gitignore file, and they will be ignored.
5:50 : git add -A. Adds all files to tracking.
6:32 : git log --oneline --graph --decorate --all. Shows the version tree.
7:33 : git help |command|. Presents the help page for the given command.
