Timothy Brown - Processor 5

With the video series, titled Processor , I wanted to create a visual interpretation of the conversation taking place between the two pipe installations. Using a combination of audio samples extracted from home movie footage, video recordings made over the past two years, and musical based scores created in response to themes of the exhibition, I created a visual journey, oscillating from the present to the past and back again. The visual narrative takes place over a series of five video pieces and is set on a continuous loop.

Processor 5 has the viewer transported back to the present, the video is unfocused and layered. It was filmed on my wife’s aunt’s property, located 45 minutes north of Winnipeg. I took various recordings of trees and other objects on her land. One of those objects happened to be a wind chime, which we can hear in the video. The wind chime represents not only an end point in the journey, but also the fusion of air and pipe. Instead of transferring sound through the pipe filled with air, it is the air activating the pipes.

The nexus of past and present is also evident in the video as you begin to hear the sounds of children’s laughter. Those voices are pulled from the first Distortion I created, as well as audio from the day of recording. That day we went out as a family. Our children made cookies with my wife, Tanis, and their great aunt, Darlene. I watched the sharing of knowledge; I watched generations of hands creating together. I watched as they laughed, and in that laughter, I could hear my mother, I could hear the past, talking to the present.
