When to use problem solving tool in continuous improvement

In this video I give an overview when to use certain Lean tool in the problem solving process.
At the end we'll also take a look at 4 common obstacles to successful root cause analysis.

The main premise is to understand what you're trying to do in each step of the root cause problem solving process. This allows you to pick suitable types of analysis tools.
1:20 - A thorough problem description is the basis of problem analysis.
4:16 - If you're not reacting to a specific problem occurrence, but for instance improve your performance from trend analysis, you probably first want to prioritise and pick a failure mode.
5:19 - Analyse root causes: first use a cause-and-effect diagram, in order not to miss any possible causes,
6:35 - and then really explore the underlying causes, using a tool like the 5 Why's.

9:27 - 4 common constraints for successful problem solving: confirmation bias, mental fixedness, unnecessary constraints and irrelevant information.
