Kicking Myths

Kicking when you are learning to swim as an adult can be one of the more difficult physical skills. This is especially true if you do not understand the incorrect beliefs about kicking for swimming.

In this video, Cori Myka creator of the Foundations of Change learning method kicks out the old beliefs and myths about leg movement for the adult beginner swimmer.

Why is kicking for swimming hard to understand? Because the mechanics work completely differently than walking.

With walking you are used to powering off the bottom of your foot. In swimming you use the top and side of the foot and leg.

On land you move yourself around by using your feet. In swimming you can use your feet, but it is easier and more frequent to use your hands.

And why are you wanting to kick anyway? Perhaps to get to to other side. Not to sound like a 5-year-old, but why?

These may seem like odd questions but it’s vital if you want to be confident safe and at ease in the water. (hint if you think you need to get to the other side to be safe then it makes learning to kick too hard)
