About Java, Sun and Oracle

Java software runs on everything from laptops to data centers, game consoles to scientific supercomputers.
1991 - James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton initiated the Java language project
James Gosling has invented java and had many rounds of coffee when he got the idea. Initially named as Oak (after Oak tree near Gosling’s office), then it got changed to Green and finally got its JAVA name from Coffee. The name is selected after discussing with his mates as he wants something that was cool, unique, and easy to spell and fun to say. Gosling designed Java with a C/C++-style syntax that system and application programmers would find familiar.

1995 - Sun Microsystems released the first public implementation of Java as Java 1.0
2006, Sun released Java virtual machine (JVM) as free and open-source software, (FOSS), under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
2010 – Oracle acquisition of Sun and pledged to foster its growth
On April 2, 2010, James Gosling resigned from Oracle.

Founded in 1982 by Vinod Khosla, Andy Bechtolsheim, and Scott McNealy, all Stanford graduate students.
Bill Joy of Berkeley, a primary developer of the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD), joined soon after and is counted as one of the original founders.
The Sun name is derived from the initials of the Stanford University Network
Oracle acquired Sun for $7.4 billion in 2010 and merged with Oracle America Inc.

Servers, Workstations, Storage, Solaris, Java, MySQL, Services, Engineered systems and Networking.

Specialization in database software and technology, cloud engineered systems and enterprise software products.
In 2015 Oracle was the second-largest software maker by revenue, after Microsoft ($98b). SAP follows 3rd position with $23b.
The company develops and builds tools for
database development and systems of middle-tier software,
enterprise resource planning (ERP) software,
customer relationship management (CRM) software and
supply chain management (SCM) software.
