Getting Started with VelPAK 2017

This video considers the latest developments to Kingdom’s VelPAK 2017 module; a depth conversion toolkit developed by Equipoise Software (http://www.equipoisesoftware.com/) , an IHS Markit development partner.

Here we look at Getting Started in VelPAK 2017 and cover the data loading process from Kingdom to VelPAK, a quick look at how you might QC the data and then an overview is given of some of the techniques that may be used in the software for the purposes of depth conversion.

The new data loading Wizard improves upon the 2016 version giving you the ability to perform the layer definition for the model at the data loading stage. A QC tool enables you to graphically plot the wells and see how the formation tops match with the corresponding time grids. If a top set is missing, or there is a geological unconformity, or if any data is missing, the software flags this and you can use the well plot to identify the correct course of action to remedy the issue.

Once the data is loaded into VelPAK, it is important to QC the data in the 3D module and the well module to ensure the data is conditioned correctly before proceeding in the task of depth converting the dataset.

When you are confident that the data is suitable, you can use the Wizard to iteratively perform a series of depth conversions, using different functions per layer, building up a layer cake ‘Best Technical Case’ model. In this video we see a range of functions being applied to the data, including Dr. Al-Chalabi’s Numerical Optimisation technique, Interval Velocity vs Mid Point Depth graphing, the calibration of Stacking Velocities for depth conversion and the ability to use a smoothed Interval Velocity grid as an external drift surface for Kriging, when mapping the Vertical Apparent Interval Velocities.

The latest version of the software also encompasses the ability to perform your uncertainty analysis faster, improving your operational efficiency using the Depth Conversion Wizard, however this is not covered in the scope of this video.
