0:00 - Create a Rectangular/Square Shape
Having selected the Rectangle Tool, check the options bar running across the top of Photoshop. Set the mode to Shape and set the Fill and/or Stroke colours/weight. Draw a shape on the canvas using the Shift key if required.
0:39 - Remove Anchor with Pen Tool
With the path just drawn still active, select the Pen Tool. Clicking on an anchor point will remove it, thus reducing the rectangular/square shape to a triangle.

This method for creating a triangle can leave a combination of anchor points selected and not selected. Entering Free Transform at this point can leave a mess of a triangle. Click in a blank part of the Layers panel to deselect the anchor points and then click back on the layer within the Layers panel. Free Transform should now act as expected.
2:01 - Do Not Use Direct Selection Tool
It's possible to create a triangle from a square shape using the Direct Selection Tool to select an anchor point and then using the Delete key to remove it. However, this creates an open path that does not allow a Stroke to completely contain the triangle.
