Hi, I am Jochem, an engineer at Tameson, and today I will talk you through the most common features of a multimeter. Multimeters are an essential tool in any electrical work. It does not matter if you are working on wiring a house or soldering some small electronics, a multimeter is a good tool to do some quick checking and troubleshooting.

Multimeters come with test probes. These have to be plugged into the correct connectors on the multimeter. There is a COM port for the ground lead and 2 or 3 other ports for the variety of measurements. In most cases, there is one port for Voltage, resistance, and anything that is measured in the same way and another port for current measurement.
In some cases, there is a 4th port to measure milliAmps and microamps.

An additional option for your multimeter is True RMS. This means that you can measure all AC waveforms accurately. With non-true-RMS multimeters, it is possible to measure perfect sinus waves, but anything different from that will be accurate.

Some multimeters come with a temperature probe. By inserting the probe in the corresponding connection, you can measure temperature.

The hold function allows you to keep the measured value on the screen of the multimeter. This can help you to remember if you cannot write anything down right away.

Meters with a backlight will illuminate the display so you can read it in the dark.

NCV or Non-Contact Voltage will help you with quick detection of live voltage.
Most meters have an LED and or buzzer that will beep if it detects live voltage.
Be careful because if a wire is insulated or behind metal it might not trigger the meter.
