Github Tutorial 2-Branch Management

Hello,

Welcome to my new video for Github- Branch management.
In previous video we have discussed about github configuration and repository setup.

In this video we are going to discuss regarding branch management.

So, What is Branch Management in Github ?

Branch operation allows creating another line of development.
We can use this operation to fork off the development process into two different directions.
For example, we released a product for 6.0 version and we might want to create a branch so that the development of 7.0 features can be kept separate from 6.0 bug fixes.

Navigate to the local repository where you have configured for the remote repository.
for ex. local repository is located at, ~/tutorial/myrepository

cd ~/tutorial/myrepository/

1. create new branch.
$ git branch new_branch

new branch is created , named new_branch.

2. To view list of available branches use below command,
$ git branch

3. if you are working in one branch, but you want to work in another branch then you need to switch between branches.
use below command to switch,

$ git checkout new_branch

But, if you are thinking that this is lengthy task then you can directly switch to the new branch at the time of branch creation,

$ git checkout -b test_branch
-b option will directly switch to the new branch.

$ git branch

Basic Branch operations:
1. Delete branch
$ git branch -D test_branch

this command will delete the branch.

2. Rename branch
git branch -m test_branch another_branch

Now, Push the recent changes to the branch
$ git push origin another_branch

here, all recent changes are pushed to the another_branch.
