• Ball Python morphs are color or pattern variations that deviate significantly from that of a normal or wild type animal.
• There are many morphs in Ball Pythons, which change the color, the pattern, or both.
• Ball Pythons naturally demonstrate high phenotypic plasticity, meaning their genes often mutate and create new colors and patterns, and they are bred in captivity in large numbers, which allows morphs that would not survive in the wild to flourish and reproduce.
• There are three types of genes that mutate and create morphs: recessive, dominant, and incomplete dominant (also known as co-dom).
• Recessive genes tend to produce some of the most striking morphs, such as albino, and can be expensive.
• Dominant genes only need one copy of the mutation to be present to be visually expressed, and tend to have a strong influence on pattern, making them valuable for creating unusual combination morphs.
• Incomplete dominant genes work a lot like dominant genes, but have a super form.
