Emotional Clojure
The principle reason for designing humanoid robots is that they have the potential to present a user interface that is very familiar to us: the same one we use when dealing with other people.However, for this to work a robot has to present recognisable and believable emotional reactions. This requires that the robot have an emotional model that it uses to process its experience of the world and guide its reactions.Clojure is a powerful tool for describing such a model both because of it’s operations on data structures and because of core.async which make it possible to describe logical processes communicating over defined channels.In this talk I’ll describe some of the current research into emotional models for artificial agents. I’ll then describe the model I’m working on, its implementation in clojure, demonstrate the model using a NAO robot and describe using Om clojurescript binding for Facebook’s ReactJS to build a web interface allowing inspection of the robot’s current emotional state.

Currently a Staff Engineer at VMware, Dave has worked as a research scientist at Xerox Research Centre Europe in Grenoble, France where he created innovative systems for information sharing and worked with peer to peer and context-driven mobile systems. At Snowtiger Design, a small web/software consultancy, he wrote the software and web user interface for Pete Townshend's Lifehouse Method - a system to generate unique pieces of music for each individual user.
Dave obtained his PhD from Manchester University, UK after work on a novel object-oriented multi-user collaborative virtual environment (CVE) called AVIARY. At Nottingham University he worked on new systems to support CVEs, collaborative information visualisation and public VR artistic experiences which were demonstrated publically at the Nottingham Now Ninety6 and NOW Ninety7 arts festivals.
Dave has been on the NAO developer program since August 2011, is a founder member of the UK NAO user group and one of the organisers of the first non-Aldebaran NAO hackathon.
