Instruments for measuring length

INSTRUMENTS FOR MEASURING LENGTH:
We make measurements all the time in our daily lives. A doctor measures your body temperature when you are ill. In school, time is measured so that each period begins on time.
Quantities such as weight or mass, time, temperature, length, speed, etc. that can be measured are called PHYSICAL QUANTITIES.

Different instruments are used to measure different quantities. Therefore, in order to make accurate measurements, you must use appropriate instruments, and know how to use these instruments properly.

In today’s lesson, we shall be looking at some instruments for measuring lengths.
LENGTH can be defined as the distance between two points. Length is measured in metres. Other units of length include centimetre, millimetre, kilometre, etc. Examples of instruments for measuring length include.; metre rule, measuring tape, surveyor’s tape, micrometer screw gauge and a pair of calipers.

1. METRE RULE.; The metre rule is used to measure the lengths of straight edges and distances of objects.
2. MEASURING TAPE.; The measuring tape is also used for measuring length.
3. SURVEYOR’S TAPE.; The surveyor’s tape is used for measuring long distances.
4. MICROMETER SCREW GAUGE.; The micrometer screw gauge is used to measure short or small lengths such as the diameter of a wire or the thickness of a paper.
5. VERNIER CALIPER.; The vernier caliper is used for measuring short straight lines, such as the diameter of a drinking cup.
