Jeff Phillips Interview
Dr. Jeffrey T. Phillips is the Director of Bands at Hendersonville High School in Hendersonville, Tennessee, where he conducts the Symphonic Band, teaches Honors and AP Music Theory, directs the Marching Band and Jazz Bands and coordinates the instrumental music classes and programs at the school. Phillips taught at Hendersonville for 16 years (1986-2002) and then moved to Pope John Paul II High School for 5 years, where he designed and implemented all instrumental music classes and programs in the school. He returned to Hendersonville High School in 2007 and is currently in his 28th year of teaching secondary school. He also taught the trombone studio at Western Kentucky University for four years and currently is in his 10th year on the Applied Music Faculty at Belmont University in Nashville where he teaches classical and commercial trombone and performs with the Belmont Faculty Brass Quintet. He is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, Western Kentucky University, Austin Peay State University, and California Coast University.
As a performer, Phillips was a member of the 1982 World's Fair Band and he remains active as a freelance trombonist in the Nashville area where he has performed with groups such as the Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra, the Nashville Wind Ensemble, and Opryland USA. In addition to various recitals and clinics, he has also been featured with the Belmont Wind Ensemble and Belmont Jazz Ensemble.
Phillips has conducted clinics throughout Tennessee and Kentucky for students in middle school through college and is active as an adjudicator and guest conductor for music groups of all genres throughout the Southeast. He has also published a variety of articles in the Bandworld, School Band and Orchestra and Tennessee Musician magazines and was a co-author of the MENC's Strategies for Teaching series and writes new music reviews for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors' Journal. His dissertation, "Towards Curricular Standards in the Band and Orchestra Classroom," was published in the NACWPI Journal. He has served as President of the Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, and the Tennessee Chapter of the International Association for Jazz Education. Phillips served two years as the TMEA State Band Chair and served two years as the National Treasurer for the American School Band Directors Association. He was elected to the position of President-elect for the ASBDA and assumed the office of President of this organization for the 2008-2009 year. He also served as a member to the ASBDA's national Executive Board as a member-at-large and has served on various committees within that organization. He is currently also the President-Elect for the Tennessee Music Education Association and will serve as President for the 2014-16 term. In 2011, he was on the faculty of the International Trombone Festival where he assisted with the Jr. ITF and conducted the Tennessee Collegiate Trombone Choir. Phillips also holds membership in a variety of music education associations including: the American Federation of Musicians (Local 257), and Phi Beta Mu, and the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. He is a member of the Al Menah Shrine, where he is a member of the Brass Band. He is also the founder and conductor of the Sumner County Community Concert Band.
Phillips is a Jupiter Band Instrument Performing Artist and Educational Clinician and performs on Jupiter trombones and euphoniums exclusively.
