This is our sixth tutorial in which we focus on Database migrations and caching.
It's very likely that you add new tables to the apps or your tables schema changes as your project grows and new features are added. For python web applications, specifically the ones based on aiohttp framework, there's a library called 'alembic' which can automatically detect changes on your tables and create revisions for each migration.
I've used this library and demonstrated how you can use it to manage database migrations. I've created a file called
docker-entrypoint.sh for the auth service. We use this file to make sure of prerequisites such as database migrations before starting up the container. Caching is a mechanism to improve the speed of a backend application. In this approach, objects are stored in an in-memory cache such as Redis for faster retrieval in the future. It's up to you to decide when to invalidate the cache and expire old objects. Make use of .env file to create tags for different environments like test or prod images. You can also use shell terminal ENV variables to overwrite the variables inside that file. For example 'export TAG=local' will overwrite the TAG in the .env file when used by docker-compose.
