Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Superscript and Subscripts in Excel using Quick Access Toolbar

there are now two items you can add to your Quick Access Toolbar

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to talk about a highly requested feature in Excel - superscript and subscript. Thanks to the idea on excel.uservoice.com, Microsoft has finally added icons for these formatting options to the quick access toolbar. No more hassle of going into the font menu and selecting the option - just one click and you're done!

But wait, there's a catch. As mentioned in yesterday's episode, there is currently a bug with the quick access toolbar. But don't worry, I have an update for you. To add the superscript and subscript icons to your quick access toolbar, go to "Customize Quick Access Toolbar" and select "Commands Not in the Ribbon". Scroll down to the "Ss" section and you'll see that the icons are not populating. But fear not, there's a workaround. Simply use the "Tell Me" box and type in "superscript" or "subscript". Right-click on the option and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar". Easy peasy!

Now, let's see how much easier it is to use these formatting options. Say you want to write "H2O" with the 2 as a subscript. Simply select the 2, press F2 to enter edit mode, and click on the subscript icon. Voila! It's that simple. However, there is one thing to keep in mind - these formatting options only work on text, not numbers. So if you want to format a number as a subscript or superscript, you'll have to add a single quote before it to make it a text cell.

I personally don't use subscripts and superscripts often, but for those who do, this feature is a game-changer. And it's all thanks to the 372 people who voted for it on excel.uservoice.com. If you have a feature that you desperately want in Excel, make sure to write it up on the website and get your co-workers to vote for it. Microsoft has already covered 20% of the top voted features in the first half of 2017, so your vote can make a difference!
