In this lecture we will learn about Data Types in SQL. Understanding the data types in SQL is the most important factor in database development. By Understanding data types we can create more professional, normalized, relational and easy to manage database columns and table structures. Every column in a table is defined with a data type, depending up on the data value its going to store. In other words, a data type defines what kind of value a column can store. There are mainly 3 data types, Numeric data types, Character data types and Temporal data types. Numeric data types stores only numeric values. Depending up on the values, the numeric data types can be Integer Numbers, Fixed-Point Numbers and Floating-Point Numbers. The Example numeric data values are price, rating, salaries etc. Character data types can store alphabets, symbols and also numbers. The Example Character data values are names, description, alphanumeric string, etc. Temporal data types stores date, time and date & time together. Data types name and size can be different in different database management system. Lets learn more about each data type one by one.
