DNS or Domain Name System uses TCP/UDP port 53. The DNS Server listen on port 53 and the client send a query request using UDP port 53.
DNS Zone-Transfers are done over TCP port 53.
DNS is a very important service for the whole Internet, for Windows Active Directory and for many other things. Without DNS the Internet would break, you would have to remember the IP address of a Domain rather than a simple name, for example: Instead of remember www.e-netsec.net you would have to remember IP address: 217.160.0.79.
So DNS have entries and these entries help in translating an IP to a name and vice-versa, it helps with mapping services, such as email, and for that purpose, it has an entry called ‘MX. These entries are also called ‘records’ and DNS have multiple records.
A Record maps a domain name to an IP
CNAME (Canonical Name) Record maps a domain or sub-domain to another domain.
MX (Mail Exchanger) Record maps emails to a specific mail server.
TXT (Text) this record can be used for many different things such as security, by adding SPF and DKIN keys to help the exchange of emails become more robust and secure.
SRV (Service) Records these records allows mapping of domains to services such as VoIP and/or IM.
PTR (Pointer) Records this record maps an IP address back to a name.
A DNS server is divided into ‘Zones’ where all the records pertaining to a domain are created and stored.
