Punctuation in Scripts
In this episode of Scriptease we’re looking at how to punctuate your screenplay. Punctuation is the unsung hero of the screenwriter’s toolkit. Those fame-hogging words get all the credit, so let’s celebrate the usefulness of punctuation for once.
Punctuation provides clarity to words by separating them into digestible chunks. In screenplays, however, punctuation plays a far more interesting role: Controlling pace. Some punctuation such as full stops, question marks and ellipses slow the reader down, whilst others speed the reader up such as commas, exclamation marks and dashes. By subtly altering the pace your script is read at, you can change the frame of mind of the reader.
