Linux Init Process Explained | A Step-by-Step Linux Tutorial for Beginners | Linux Init | Part 1

Linux Init Process

The init process is the first and most important process that runs on a Linux system. It is responsible for starting and managing all other processes, as well as setting up the environment and performing various tasks during booting and shutdown.

The init process has a process ID (PID) of 1, which means it is the parent of all other processes. It is also the only process that can adopt orphaned processes, which are processes whose parent has terminated.

There are different implementations of the init process, such as SysVinit, Upstart, and systemd. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, and different Linux distributions may use different ones by default. However, they all share some common features and functions.

The init process typically reads a configuration file that specifies how to start and stop various services and programs. It also defines different runlevels, which are modes of operation that determine what services are available. For example, runlevel 0 is for halt, runlevel 1 is for single-user mode, runlevel 3 is for multi-user mode without graphical interface, and runlevel 5 is for multi-user mode with graphical interface.

The init process also handles signals from the kernel or the user, such as SIGTERM, SIGINT, or SIGKILL. These signals can be used to terminate, interrupt, or kill processes. The init process may also send signals to other processes to control their behavior.

The init process is essential for the proper functioning of a Linux system. It is the first process that runs after the kernel is loaded, and the last process that runs before the system shuts down. It is also the root of the process tree, and the ultimate authority over all other processes.
